This project aims to provide scholarships for both teachers and students at We Yone Child Foundation's schools and skill training centres. The scholarships will support teachers' professional development and provide the brightest students with access to quality education, fostering academic excellence and skill development. By investing in education, the project seeks to empower individuals, strengthen the community's capacity for sustainable development, and benefit pre-primary school students and teachers.

Project beneficiaries:

32 teachers from WYCF’s two primary and two secondary schools will directly benefit from the Teacher Development Project. They will enroll in a government-recognized distance teacher training college and attend teaching training workshops run by WYCF Head of Schools to improve their teaching skills/techniques. The 1,000 children who attend the WYCF’s three primary schools, will also benefit from this project, through the teachers’ improved teaching & communication abilities.

Community needs assessment:

When schools closed during the covid19 crisis, as well as the disruption to learning for children across the country, teachers that had enrolled in college in 2019 also missed out on one year of basic training. Untrained and unqualified teachers are a significant issue in community schools because, as well as generally delivering a lower standard of education, they are unable to access a government salary. Consultations with the Sierra Leone Ministry of Education have shown that all teachers at WYCF schools must also complete the teacher training course for the schools to qualify for government approval. The long-term sustainability of schooling in these communities is dependent on this.

  • WYCF has previously run ad-hoc training workshops for teachers. This project was designed using lessons learned from these workshops; teachers require a consistent training programme to improve their standard of teaching and make significant impact on student learning outcomes.
  • COST PER STUDENT: € 60
  • COST PER TEACHER € 100
