My father is a local carpenter who hardly gets contracts

The father is a local carpenter who hardly gets contracts that are gives him much money to take care of the family. For that reason, the mother is strongly engaged in petty trading which is used to sustain the family. She and her elder sibling helped their mother in trading during weekends and few hours after school every day. ‘Even though they help me in trading after school, yet I tried very hard to ensure they don’t miss their extra-lesson hours every day because I believe with education our lives will be changed,’ said the mother. Isatu is the second of the family. Since her recruitment into the girl’s scholarship programme her academic performance has increasingly improved over even her elder brother and my other children her father lamented. In the first year of the project when Isatu entered JSS1, she had an overall average 94% which made her the best student with the highest average scored not only amongst the 30 Joan Davis supported vulnerable girls but also in her school entirely. This year as well, Isatu is amongst the 3 girls who in this second year/2 of the project implementation recorded excellent performance in their academic work. ‘I have been triggered and guided by the encouragement and advises given to us by Aunty Hawa and the other Social Workers from WYCF on how taking my education above all other things will help me to take my family especially my mother who is suffering a lot out of poverty before she dies. I want to say many thanks to Joan and the WYCF office for their great work in my life. And also for me to live the type of life I have always dreamt of becoming one of the renowned female lawyers in my country Sierra Leone with the continuous support of the WYCF and the Joan Davis because my family is poor and may not be able to provide for me to reach my goal’. Narrated Isatu when she was asked how she feels about her performance and her hopes for the future. ‘I am very sure she will make a very good grade in her Basic Secondary School Examination BECE. She is determined and very much focused with regards her school work’ said the class teacher at Grace Elementary Junior Secondary School in George Brook.

Impact and Outcomes So Far

WYCF strengthened its relationship with families, extending its impact beyond education to community well-being.

Mariama, a 9year old student

used to miss school frequently due to stomach infections. After attending hygiene workshops and receiving a hygiene kit, her health improved, and she now attends school regularly.

Abdul, a father of three

learned about safe water storage during a community meeting. He implemented what he learned, reducing his family’s incidents of waterborne diseases.

A group of students

from the School Health Club led a handwashing campaign that reached over 300 children and their families, instilling lasting hygiene habits in the community.
