Health & Hygiene sensitization

Health & Hygiene sensitization

October 2012 - Ongoing

During the course of Summer School in 2012, WYCF noticed an alarmingly high number of illnesses amongst the children in our schools. Around the same time, it was declared that Sierra Leone was facing the worst Cholera outbreak in 15 years.

WYCF quickly recognised the need to protect our children and their families from preventable diseases. Up-to-date, we have established school health clubs in all our schools, these clubs take the lead to sensitise colleagues’ students and community stakeholders during our meetings and events.

The Challenges

1. Every day, 3-5 out of 90-100 children left school early due to illness. 2. Class sizes fluctuated as children stayed home sick. 3. Unhealthy practices such as poor hand hygiene and consumption of unsafe drinking water were prevalent. 4. Limited access to healthcare and basic hygiene resources further worsened the situation.

5. Class sizes fluctuated as children stayed home sick.

Our Solution's to combat these challenges.

WYCF launched a comprehensive Health & Hygiene Sensitization Programme in George Brook and Kroo Bay. Our approach included:

1. Deliver a Health & Hygiene sensitization programme in George Brook and Kroo Bay; 2. Disseminate information through focus groups in both communities; 3. Target a relevant topic each week, over the course of 7 weeks: Water, Food, Body, Scabies, Cholera & Dysentery, HIV/AIDS, Smoking & Drugs;

Impact and Outcomes So Far

WYCF strengthened its relationship with families, extending its impact beyond education to community well-being.

Mariama, a 9year old student

used to miss school frequently due to stomach infections. After attending hygiene workshops and receiving a hygiene kit, her health improved, and she now attends school regularly.

Abdul, a father of three

learned about safe water storage during a community meeting. He implemented what he learned, reducing his family’s incidents of waterborne diseases.

A group of students

from the School Health Club led a handwashing campaign that reached over 300 children and their families, instilling lasting hygiene habits in the community.
